Massive expansion of high-tech infrastructure for universities in Northern Bavaria

The budget committee of the Bavarian state parliament has granted approval for the construction of the high-performance computing center at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). On hearing of the decision, Bavaria’s science minister Markus Blume expressed his thanks to the committee and stressed, “Getting the ‘green light’ from parliament means that nothing more stands in the way of this major project at FAU – we are developing and establishing cutting-edge computing infrastructure that will allow us to venture into entirely new dimensions of data processing.” The project approval paves the way for detailed planning and finally implementation of the project.

Minister Markus Blume also declared, “We are investing more than 270 million euros in IT infrastructure with this project, and have further increased the real power to 10 MW, moving up into the Champions League for computing power and data processing. Thanks to the high-performance computing center we are equipped to cope with the rapid speed of development of artificial intelligence. The extensive expansion of the computer infrastructure not only constitutes a decisive leap forward for FAU, but also for the entire region. All northern Bavarian universities will benefit from the new infrastructure.”

Professor Dr. Gerhard Wellein from NHR@FAU is thrilled about the opportunities the new infrastructure will offer, allowing the Erlangen National High-Performance Computing Center (NHR@FAU) and FAU’s computing center to develop into a competence and innovation center for science and research in Northern Bavaria. “The new building is a central component towards establishing a beacon for the region with an international reputation. We are synergizing artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and data and providing pioneering IT services, not only in these fields. For this to succeed, we need both a modern working environment for the cleverest minds and energy-efficient infrastructures for IT systems of the highest performance class.” The new buildings will include a computing building and an office building, designed as a Passivhaus.

Nationwide significance and part of a national network

Establishing high-performance computing infrastructure in Northern Bavaria is of nationwide significance and is considered a flagship project. After approval from the Joint Science Conference (GWK), NHR@FAU was set up in 2021 in order to form a national network with a further eight centers across the whole of Germany. The federal government and the states are providing funding for an initial period of ten years (2021–2030) for the hardware, operating costs and personnel costs of the project partners. The new building for the computing center at FAU Campus Erlangen (South) means the Bavarian government is creating the best possible facilities under its own responsibility.
